Application Background
Ethylene glycol (EG) is manufactured from ethylene oxide (EO), and typically, both are manufactured at the same site. Fine filtration is usually required because both materials are sold as feedstock to the film and fiber industry. Any small amount of particulate matter remaining in the feedstreams will affect the quality of the final product especially if it is a thin film or fiber. This will reduce its market value.
Ethylene oxide is also used as a de-icing material. In this case, filtration is required to prevent plugging of spear nozzles on the de-icing equipment.
In addition to the fine level of filtration for these applications, the hazardous nature of these chemicals must also be consid-ered. Both ethylene glycol and ethylene oxide are considered hazardous chemi-cals, and the manufacturers are required to minimize operator exposure. Providing a filter cartridge with a high dirt holding capacity will yield long filter life, minimizing filter changeouts and operator exposure. Another benefit to long filter life and fewer cartridge changeouts is a reduction in hazardous waste disposal costs. Important note: Disposal costs for hazardous waste are increasing due to the sparsity of hazardous waste land- fills.
